Trinity News

While I was in a student, I found myself editing the college newspaper Trinity News. At that time it was a free fortnightly broadsheet of some 24 pages with a tabloid-sized 20-page features supplement called TN2.

As Editor I was in charge of a 50-strong team of volunteers. This team did not contain any designers, probably because the college didn’t offer any design courses. As a result I found myself laying out 44 pages each production week as well as taking care of my other duties.

It was a real education in pragmatic design – the need to get it all done fighting with any innate perfectionism. Added to this was my responsibility to the content and business wings of the paper.

Despite all this the newspaper was a real success and brought me into contact with some of my most trusted collaborators. It also won some awards – Best Newspaper, Best Editor and Journalist in the National Student Media Awards.

A full library of that year’s issues is available here.

Gearóid's time as Editor of Trinity News changed a quite "studenty" newspaper into something of as high a standard as any newspaper in Ireland. Writing for Trinity News was very pleasant, as anytime I needed help with an article I could pop into the office where the spirit of teamwork Gearóid created was amazing.
